A Multi-dimensional Approach to Assessing and Treating Dysfunctional Breathing

Training for Health Professionals 2017

IBT Practioner Training - Level 1 and 2

The 2 levels of this course provide comprehensive training  in the theoretical understanding and practical skills needed to assess and treat the three key dimensions of dysfunctional breathing.

Level 1 introduces Dr. Courtney’s multi-dimensional model of dysfunctional breathing and then provides in-depth training of the biomechanical dimension of breathing functionality.

Level 2 focuses on the psychophysiological and biochemical dimensions of breathing functionality.

This course is suitable for practitioners such as osteopaths, chiropractors, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists, speech therapists, naturopaths, dentists, psychologists, breathing therapists and others who want to include a systematic, comprehensive and evidence based approach to breathing assessment and breathing retraining in their clinical work.

It familiarizes participants with a number of evidence based assessment tools including the Manual Assessment of Respiratory Motion (MARM), validated questionnaires and evidence based protocols as well as effective breathing therapies including the Buteyko method, capnometry assisted biofeedback, breathing rehabilitation, intermittent hypoxic training, resonance frequency breathing and biofeedback and explores the research evidence and practical applications of these various approaches.

Level 1 - Assessing and Treating Dysfunctional Breathing - the Neuromuscular and Biomechanical Dimension

Overview -

Level 1 provides an overview of the functions and dysfunctions of breathing and Dr. Courtney’s multidimensional model of dysfunctional breathing.

The course then focuses on the assessment and treatment of biomechanical and neuromuscular aspects of breathing dysfunction. These include breathing pattern disorders, mouth breathing, diaphragm dysfunction and their significance for disorders of posture, motor control, vocalization, muscular-skeletal pain (e.g. pelvic, spinal, shoulder, TMJ), malocclusion as well as for the function of the respiratory, cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive and autonomic nervous system.

Level 2 - Assessing and Treating Dysfunctional Breathing - The Biochemical and Psychophysiological Dimension

Overview -

Level 2 focuses on the biochemical and psychophysiological functions and dysfunctions of breathing.  Participants will understand and be able to assess hyper and hypoventilation disorders using evidence based methods including capnometry and validated questionnaires.

This course also teaches various breathing therapy approaches (including  capnometry biofeedback, the Buteyko method, Intermittent Hypoxic Training and indirect breathing approaches) for normalizing ventilation and improving the biochemical aspects of breathing homeostasis. It trains participants in key concepts of respiratory psychophysiology including the relationships between breathing, conditioned responses and cognitive and emotional processes. This understanding is then applied to skillfully applying  breathing therapy strategies for  patients with anxiety and stress related disorders.

Level 1 course - Fri 1st - Sun 3rd September 2017

Cost - $1950

Venue - International College of Management, 151 Darley St, Manly, Sydney, Australia
