Good Gut Bacteria Lessen Anxiety and Depression

Probiotic bacteria change the brains chemisty increasing the levels of calming neurotransmitters like GABA and increasing tolerance to stress.  Mice given lactobacillus showed an increased tolerance to stress as evidenced by lowered cortisol levels and radical changes in behaviour as compared with mice that were not given the bacteria.  Reseachers believe this means that probiotic bacteria might be used to help people with anxiety and depression. This paper adds to the growing body of scientific literature on the gut-brain axis which links our mental function to the function of our digestive system.
